Ashtanga is a structured style of yoga practice introduced by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in 1975. The word Ashtanga is composed of two Sanskrit words, “Ashta” and “Anga.” “Ashta” refers to the number eight, while “Anga” means limb or body part. Therefore, Ashtanga is the union of the eight limbs of yoga, into one complete, holistic system. These eight-limbs of yoga represent the various branches of the philosophy of the yoga sutras that form the foundation in the Ashtanga Yoga School.
The Ashtanga philosophy is to integrate all of the eight limbs of yoga, which include: Yama (moral codes), Niyama (self-discipline), Asana (posture), Pranayama (breath control), Pratyahara (sense withdrawal), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (oneness with the self). Vinyasa is a Sanskrit phrase, roughly translated as "to place in a purposeful way", meaning the sequence of asana becomes a seamless flow. So an Ashtanga Vinyasa flow class will feature Ashtanga postures which are synchronised into a flowing sequence.
Vinyasa classes will encourage the student to practice fluid movement linking postures together and transitioning from pose to pose with the intention of using the breath to create a moving meditation.
The system of yoga known as “Iyengar Yoga” was created and developed over 75 years ago by Yogacharya B.K.S.Iyengar. B.K.S Iyengar devoted his life to the evolution of his approach to yoga, based on the traditional eight limbs of yoga taught over 2500 years ago by the sage Patanjali. The Iyengar yoga system of teaching is methodical and progressive, emphasising detailed correctness and absolute safety.
When necessary, it uses supports called ‘props’ that allow students to progress in their practice of postures safely at their own pace, to suit their body. Beginners work in a basic way on simple postures according to their capabilities. As they develop they then move on to more refined ways of working as well as to more complex postures. The methodology of Iyengar yoga means it is suitable for everyone, whatever your ability, age, body shape or level of flexibility. You’ll learn through a carefully graded and systematic programme of Asana (posture), suited to your ability
Our mission is to train confident Yoga teachers. When you complete your course you will:
Hatha yoga is a traditional branch of yoga, focusing on a pose for an extended period of time with awareness of breath and mind.
The roots of Hatha yoga can be traced back to ancient India but became more systematised with texts such as Hatha Yoga Pradipika.
“Ha” translates as Sun and “Tha” means moon. Essentially the practice aims to balance the yin and yang energies within and the male and female energy (shiva and shakti) - the sun and moon.
Hatha yoga emphasises the physical body as a tool for spiritual development. Through disciplined practice, Hatha Yoga aims to purify the body, control the breath and steady the mind.
If we say Hatha Vinyasa then it is more dynamic in structure and sequence.
